Henry De Toulouse Lautrec, Woman as Myth: Woman as Myth (exhibition catalogue) Details

From Library Journal This catalog accompanies an exhibition of French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) at the Basil and Elise Goulandris Contemporary Art Foundation in Andros, Greece. Published in the centenary year of Toulouse-Lautrec's death (2001), this volume examines images of women in his art, as they were his favorite artistic subject. Toulouse-Lautrec scholars Gotz Adriani and Daniele Deynck also underline the dignity and lack of judgment that the artist brings to his renderings of prostitutes in brothels. The innovation of his flat, stylized forms and the modernity of the subjects of the theater and cabaret are also mentioned. Despite high-quality color reproductions, catalog entries on each exhibited artwork, and a photograph-filled chronology, this book is thin on scholarly information. Considering how much recent writing there has been about women in relation to art and artists (Griselda Pollack and Linda Nochlin are two art historians who have done this successfully), it is surprising that this book does not have more original or meaty essays. Recommended for large collections or collections currently without a book on this artist. Sandra Rothenberg, Framingham State Coll. Lib., MA Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc. Read more
